What is speech therapy?

Speech is defective when it deviates so far from the speech of other people that it calls attention to itself, interferes with communication, or causes its possessor to be maladjusted to his environment. All Speech deviations are not, of course, speech defects.

You may be here because your preschool teacher or pediatrician suggested that your child may need speech therapy, however you aren’t exactly sure what that means. Technically speaking, speech therapy is a service provided by a licensed speech-language pathologist in order to help your child communicate more clearly. Children can need speech therapy for many different communication difficulties.

Speech therapy usually falls in the following categories:

  1. Articulation - (phonology) the way children say the sounds in words

  2. Language - expressive language is the way children put words together to express their wants and needs and receptive language is the way the hear and understand the world around them

  3. Fluency - stuttering

  4. Voice - the vocal quality of our words and sentences

  5. Pragmatic - the social component of language
